As I sit here in my kitchen nook, I realize a lot of you may also be sitting on the fence when it comes to putting smart home gadgets in your home. I don't blame you. In our household, I'm the one that is drawn into it whereas my significant other is not. She doesn't hate it and she likes the convenience of turning on lights from another room but she isn't a smart home evangelist like me.
You can go nuts buying every smart home device out there and making your home automated but that will cost you a lot of money. I intend to show you how you can put smarts in your home without breaking the bank. For the budget-conscious consumer, this blog is for you.
I keep explaining to her that having a smart home is not all about security. A lot of people think that a smart home involves putting up a bunch of cameras around the house and having your home monitored while you're at work or on vacation. Others think that they can buy an Amazon Echo or a Google Home device and call it a smart home.
Having a smart home these days is really a dream come true. I remember growing up and watching the Jetsons on tv? When it debut in 1962, we watched how George Jetson and his wife, Jane had lived in a home filled with gadgetry. They had a robot named Rosie who did all the housework and helped with the parenting. Their teenage daughter Judy and younger brother Elroy along with their dog, Astro all lived in Orbit City where all the homes and businesses were raised above ground by adjustable columns.
Finally in 1998 to the early 2000's, smart home technologies were available to the general public. I started dabbling in it in 2004 when I bought a few Insteon switches and played around with the X10 system from Radio Shack. It was fun turning on lights from another room and programming the console to turn off all lights in the house with one switch.
Smart home technology has really come a long way. But if you're not technology-savy or can't figure out your smartphone, don't worry. Setting up a lot of these smart home gadgets are really easy and once you have installed one device, the next one gets easier.
